The CCAT (cellule de coordination des actions de terrains) organised a demonstration in the centre of Nouméa on Thursday 22 February to show its opposition to government policy in New Caledonia. The CCAT is part of the Union Calédonienne, the oldest pro-independence party in New Caledonia. The demonstration got out of hand when Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin arrived near the demonstrators. Two non-independence political parties (Rassemblement and Loyalistes) have lodged a complaint against the CCAT. The CCAT accuses the police of being behind the clashes.
