They defy the authorities and swim despite the ban
The bays of Nouméa have been banned from swimming this year following several shark attacks. Noumea town hall is currently installing an anti-shark net to allow the beaches to be reopened. The installation of this net, several hundred metres long, has not been met with unanimous approval, far from it. On Saturday 21 October, a group of grandmothers calling themselves the seven “fantastic grandmothers” defied the bathing ban. We can’t imagine the police stopping these respectable grannies. For them, the anti-shark net will irreparably disrupt biodiversity by preventing fish and turtles from passing through. The Baie des Citrons is in fact extremely rich. You don’t need to take a boat and go far to see the beautiful marine animals. All you have to do is go to this bay in the wealthy southern districts of Nouméa. You’ll find turtles, rays, snakes and a host of other animals that look after the area. The collective suggested to the town hall that the size of the net should be reduced.
