The French statistics institute (Isee) has published a new assessment of the riots that devastated the Caledonian economy in May.
– Six thousand jobs were lost;
– Nearly 20,000 people benefited from short-time working. This represents 29% of private-sector employees.
– Only 4,929 jobless people were compensated for total unemployment, i.e. 7.4% of the salaried workforce.
– According to Isee, half of all companies applied for short-time working;
– Between May and August, the food price index rose by 4.3%.
– This is not linked to the riots, but mining and metal production are collapsing. In August, mining output reached 545,770 tonnes, compared with 1.8 million tonnes a year earlier.
