Everything has increased in Polynesia since January 1st 2022. The price of taxes, gas, electricity, food products… It is a unanimous observation. And consumers are paying the consequences. Even products classified as “basic necessities”, such as sugar or rice, are more expensive. The further away from Tahiti, the higher the increase. The Institute of Statistics estimates that the increase is 4% in one year.
The reason for the price hike is the increase in world demand and the rising cost of maritime transport. The creation of a new tax (the social VAT) which will come into force in April this year could also, according to its opponents, reduce the purchasing power of consumers.
